In the fifth part of the prequal series I will delve into the Higurashi franchise. I will start with the original that started it all, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni that came out all the way back in 2006. The series certainly left a mark with its style of horror and gore but behind the mindless violence was an interesting tale of mystery that kept us questioning right until the shows end. It is certainly a show worth watching although it is not for the faint of heart or kids.

In the fourth part of the prequal series I will look into Magia Records which is a side story to the renowned Madoka series. While not quite as good as its main story counterpart Magia Records was still a fairly enjoyable watch. What is more this series has the potential for its second season to eclipse the opener as most of the character exposition and backstory has been covered.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story also known as Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica Gaiden is a dark magical girl series that was originally broadcast in the Winter of 2020. A second season of Magia Record is due for release in the Summer of 2021 season whilst a third and final season is provisionally due to air in the Winter of 2022. That release date for the final season is still subject to change so take it with a pinch of salt.

In the third part of the prequel series I will cover the latest completed season of Slime Reincarnation. I actually found season two to be better than the first so if you have already watched season one then I highly recommend you watch this.

Review

Season two of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is an action/fantasy isekai series that was initially released in the Winter of 2021 season. It kicks off just where the first season ended. If you have not seen season one then you must watch it otherwise you will get lost in the plot developments. At the absolute minimum you need to watch episode 24.5 which is a recap (and perhaps teaser) episode to the entire first season.

The second of show of this prequel series will be the most anticipated series for the summer 2021 season. Season one of Slime Reincarnation was actually pretty good but I felt the first part of season two was actually stronger. Stayed tuned for part 3 when I look at that!

Review:

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime otherwise known as Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken is a fantasy/action based isekai series which was first released in the Autumn of 2018. This show has also spawned a second season with the first part originally airing in the winter of 2021 while the second half is currently ongoing. The series centres on 37-year-old officer Satoru Mikami who (surprise, surprise) gets killed early on in typical isekai fashion. It is not death by truck-kun instead he dies from a deranged killer who stabs him out of the blue for reasons that remain unclear… His death is not a...

In this mini-series I will be looking at the prequel seasons of currently airing anime. Most of them are pretty good actually so it worth giving them a go but if you want to get the lowdown then read the reviews I will be posting. I will start with Kobayashi seeing as it was one of the most anticipated series this season. Enjoy!

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid otherwise known as Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon is a slice-of-life, comedy, fantasy series. The first season originally aired in the winter season of 2017 while the second season is currently on-going as of summer 2021. The series kicks off with our main protagonist Kobayashi being plastered after having one too many drinks. Hung over and groggy she wakes up the next day only to find a maid, a dragon maid no less, swearing loyalty and devotion to her new master! It is an amusing start and perhaps one...

Review

Wonder Egg Priority is a psychological, drama series animated by the studio Cloverworks. The main series originally aired in the winter season of 2021 with episode 13 being a 45-minute special episode released early in the summer season of 2021. For the purposes of this review, I will be covering both the main series and the special episode.

Wonder Egg comes out the blocks blazing with the opening episode being a rollercoaster of emotion. The episode initially starts on a sombre note as it introduces us to Ai Ooto; a girl who suffers from social anxiety and depression. Her melancholy state is made considerably worse upon discovery of the recent suicide of Koito Nagase; Ai’s best friend. At hearing this news Ai is devastated and at her wits end. These depressive emotions however quickly subside to feelings of danger and anxiety when Ai is presented with a...

Searching for a good anime series can be a difficult thing to do especially when you are busy or otherwise strapped for time. That is why I have complied this list to show what is hot and what is not so you don't have to faff around watching rubbish and only strike for the series that are worth watching! To make things easier, I have ranked all the anime titles I have seen this season from best to worst hoping that one (or more) of these series will take your fancy!

I will note there are a couple of promising series that are not yet finished and will go into the summer season or beyond. The most promising being Fumetsu no Anata e (To Your Eternity) and quite possibly 86. I have heard great things about Fruit Basket the final season but after seeing the original series not too long ago I am not holding high hopes for the remake being all that hence I am not including that series in my list. If anyone wishes to say otherwise then please post your opinions! With that out the way here...

Super Cub is a slice-of-life, school series which was animated by Studio Kai. Super Cub stars Koguma as the main character who is a girl with no parents, no friends, no hobbies and no future goals and is struggling to find her way through life. The backdrop sounds deary even depressing so are we going to experience a sombre experience similar to Welcome to the NHK or No Matter How I Look At It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Unpopular!?

Not really. Whilst the imagery and tone in the opening episode may suggest a damp/melancholy experience the turning point comes early on when Koguma buys a Honda Super Cub on the cheap. Her dull, directionless life gains a new element of joy that was not previously there. Sure, Koguma still displays a distinctly gloomy attitude there is a switch that turns on when she first sets foot on her scooter. It quickly becomes apparent that this scooter...

Review

Mars Red is an action/military, vampire series produced by the studio Signal.MD. Me being a sucker for vampire series I couldn’t help but give this a look and I was encouraged when reading the premise of the show. Mars Red is set in Tokyo during the 1920s and follows a special vampire unit led by Yoshinobu Maeda. This vampire unit is an experimental team that is deployed to undertake covert vampire hunting missions. It is also assigned the additional task of procuring additional vampires into the military.

On paper it would seem Mars Red has a lot going for it, right? Good setup for a plot, potential for both action, intrigue and perhaps a unique look on the vampire genre not to mention the 20s setting which could lead to atheistically pleasing scenes. So, does it deliver on this early promise? For the most part my answer would be no. You see whilst Mars Red does...

Odd Taxi is a mystery series and I would say a surprise hit for the spring season. When observing the promotional picture of this anime one could easily be mistaken that this series was catered for kids seeing as the show is filled with anthropomorphic animals. Not only that but the studio OLM most extensive works include the Pokémon franchise. However, if one were to take even a cursory glance at any single episode you will quickly discover it is anything but a simple child’s story.

Review:

Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou otherwise known as Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway is a romantic drama produced by the studio Project No.9. I suppose by reading the title of this anime coupled by the fact it is a romantic series will have some people running for the hills. It is certainly a bold decision to not only cast the primary relationship with characters of such differing ages but also make the girl a teenager. Alarm bells will ring but the older Yoshida and supporting cast adds a maturity and balance to the overall dialogue and plot progression that ensures Higehiro avoids the worst pitfalls.

Review:

Godzilla Singular Point is the latest in the long-lasting franchise that is Godzilla. I cannot claim to be a Godzilla buff (despite the handle I use) so any easter eggs or allusions made in previous movies will be missed by me. With that out the way this latest rendition of Godzilla is an anime original story which was a collaboration between Bones animation studio and Netflix so we know this one is going to be a big budget release which one would hope has a good dose of original thinking seeing as Bones is involved.

My general expectation for anything involving Godzilla is a mindless non-stop action seeing the big man (and possible rival to myself) creating great devastation to Tokyo and perhaps other cities if Godzilla goes truly rampant. That is the Godzilla way, right? Well, if that is your expectation then you need a rain check cause this Godzilla series is not like...

Review:

Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san otherwise known as Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro is a slice-of-life, comedy/romantic series staring the titular character Nagatoro and her often teased senpai (older classmate) Hachiouju. Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagotoro has a similar dynamic to the series Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Teasing Master Takagi-san). It, in essence, centres on the relationship of Nagatoro and her source of jokes (and affections) towards her senpai following all the pranks and antics the pair get up to.

I would say Don't Toy with Me, Nagatoro handles this teasing dynamic better than Teasing Master Takaga-san because unlike that series, the pranks do not always favour one character. In this anime whilst Nagatoro is often the main instigator there are numerous occasions where her plans and pranks backfire adding to a degree of suspension as we do not know how...

Review:

How to summon a demon lord season two is an isekai, ecchi, harem series and as the name implies is a continuation from the first season which originally aired in the summer of 2019. Now with this being a harem and ecchi series I can say with certainty that Demon lord will NOT be for everyone. If you do not like harem shows then I would advice you stay well clear of this as there is nothing here that really goes beyond the beaten path. This one plays by the numbers so only open the book if you like the rules of the playbook!

To give a bit of a backdrop or for those who have largely forgotten what season one was all about Demon Lord is a series which stars Takuma Sakamoto aka Diablo as the main character. Takuma is a anti-social shut-in who has over levelled his...

Review:

Slime Taoshite 300-nen, Shiranai Uchi ni Level Max ni Nattemashita or I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level is an isekai/fantasy, slice-of-life, comedy series. Not to be confused with the similarly titled slime series called: “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” which also confusingly is another isekai/fantasy series. This Slime series centres on Azusa Aizawa who is a 27-year-old woman who dies from overwork only to be reincarnated as a witch who is immortal. Over the course of 300 years, she kills a bunch of slimes and unexpectedly reaches max level. It is at this point where the main chunk of this series takes place.

So far, the premise and genre seem pretty generic and all the points mentioned thus far seem to cover the typical isekai anime checklist...

Sentouin, Hakenshimasu! otherwise known as Combatants Will Be Dispatched is a comedy, action, fantasy series. What is notable and garnered attention to this show is the fact the original manga was written by Natsume Akatsuki; the creator of the hit series Konasuba. Personally, I enjoyed Konasuba and upon hearing of the release of this series I was looking forward to giving it a go.

Combatants Will Be Dispatched does share some similarities with Konasuba as both series parody the isekai, fantasy genre although in the case of the former I would say it is more a parody of fantasy. This comes from the fact that our main protag Sentouin aka Agent Six works for the evil Kisaragi corporation that seeks to claim domination of every planet in the galaxy. So instead of saving the planet he is there to subjugate the world to the evil Kisaragi corporation muhahah...

Review:

Vivy: Fluoride Eye’s Song is a sci-fi, action/thriller with musical elements. It is an anime orignal story which was produced by Wit Studio. Wit Studio previous works have included great anime series such as Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga and Owari No Sereph. As a result of Wit Studio’s previous works I was keen on giving this a go hoping this would be another hidden gem and for the most part I was not disappointed.

The basic premise for Vivy Fluoride is that in 100 years’ time an advanced form of AI will destroy humanity and it is Vivy’s mission to save this apocalyptic future from occurring. Whilst this may sound cliché there is a twist to this basic formula. Instead of this series typically involving a human protagonist the creators have opted to make the saviours an AI and robot.

The anime starts with us briefly seeing the apocalyptic events before it...

Review:

Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out! Is a slice of life, romantic, comedy series which initially released in the summer of 2020. At the time of its release Uzaki created quite a stir in the anime community. Most of this controversy was laid at the titular character Uzaki and her somewhat childlike and sexualised image. If you are a person that is sensitive to any provocative moments then this series may not be for you. If I am to give my honest opinion, I believe that this criticism was largely unwarranted as whilst the series does have a lot of comical misunderstandings and sexual innuendo there is actually not a great deal of ecchi content given the genre of this series. Plus, the age of the character, as seen later in the series, makes it pretty clear she is an adult albeit a petite girl (well in height at least!)

With that out the way how is the actual series...
