Kami-sama only knows how much I need to stop doing that. I get looks everytime I go to Borders. It's like they know who I am!

I haven't done it yet, but I've been meaning to do it. When I was at my college there was a B&N down the street and I would every so often I would go there for 2 or 3 hours and just read a lot of the gaming magazines for free. I would have done it with manga, but for some reason I could never find the graphic novel section. I could find a small table and a small rack with some manga, but it wasn't much. Then when I went back for my sister's graduation I realized how much of an idiot I was and I would pass right by that section all the time. Does the borders you go to have chairs where you can just sit down and read? Cause the one by my college had quite a few of them and a starbucks so you could just sit down and read for free without getting any kind of bad or awkward looks from other people and the B&N staff.

well, it's crazy how much the graphic novel section at my borders has grown. two years ago they had to rearrange the entire store so they could give the graphic novel its own entire section not just a shelf in the middle of the store. when i was a freshman in highschool they had about one row dedicated to manga but now it's it own section. i haven't actually gone back to that store in a while because whenever i go there are always just a giant group of people sitting on the floor reading manga.

If I so much as flip through a book, they give me dirty looks and hover around until I put them back on the shelf

Which is really annoying, when you pick up a new series and want to see what the art and story is like. The managers at my local bookstore don't let anyone read any books through. When the store opened, they had all these chairs in the store and encouraged reading, but now they're all gone.

I love going to Borders in the US. They leave you alone and you can browse in peace. I have a friend though, who apparently spent a lot of her vacation time at a nearby bookstore reading manga every day

I guess smaller, more local bookstores worry about it more, but the big chain stores (Barnes&Nobles, Borders, etc...) don't really care. The stores are way too big anyway so even if they did care it wouldn't be hard to hide in a corner and just sit there reading. Hell, I spent a good 20 minutes just standing in front of the manga section of B&N reading the first volume of Evangelion Angelic Days and was never told a thing. Some people who work there even walked right by me and didn't give me any weird look or say anything, although I did end up buying all 4 volumes of Angelic Days that they had after that.

It's so nice having a B&N so close to home. It takes me about 5 minutes to drive there and it will be even better if I manage to get a job there. Can anyone say employee discount?

I'm talking about a big chain store!

Chapters owned by Indigo, the only bookstore chain in Canada

(they even own Coles). I prefer to buy my manga in the US just because the shelves are usually stalked with more, newer stuff. Or I go find a store which specializes in manga/comics.

I really don't have the time to do that, however I do skim through a few to see what looks the most interesting, and then purchase it or leave. I live not too far from a Barnes & Noble, so I'm able to go there within walking distance. I might try reading there sometime, but then that would spoil it if it was a good book and I want to buy it. I'd love so much to skim through newer books that are sealed with plastic to see if they're even remotely good. The only time I ever got a dirty look was from a store manager when I was skimming through some imported dojinshi. I know that's pretty much common for browsing through hentai or any type of pornographic magazine/book, but these were a good size and fairly expensive, so I'd like to know what I'm about to purchase either way.

hhahaha, i love it when i see little kids get mad when the manga that they want to look through has plastic and they don't understand why so they go ahead and just rip the plastic off. so good. I had some little kid next to me do that today and one of the store employees flipped out and ripped it out of the kids hand (i believe it was volume 7 of FAKE) the kid started crying and then the mom came over wondering why her kid was crying, she was about to yell at the employee but i interviened and showed her why it was covered in plastic. rofl. she backed off.

haha lol, thats a funny story Annavp21

i don't have a book store near me which sells mangas but when i go into city and go to kino (specalised store for manga/anime) i always see a bunch of people just standing there reading XD the staff don't care that you spend a whole day there just reading manga but you can't sit >.< i always read the manga there just because no one says anything

i only ever buy manga if its something that is really good.

Thats more or less what i do,

I dont get the time to just sit there and read because either the people go nuts at you or there are other things you need to do so you havnt got the time.

But i do skim through a Manga if its one i havnt seen before and want to know what its about, otherwise its pointless buying if you dont know what its like IMO.

I just skim and buy for the new novels, but manga volumes that I have already own, I just buy the new volumes without looking in them. But I have to go Barnes & Nobles or Borders with a list so I don't buy a book that I already have.

I used to do this with normal books, not manga. We have a university book store next to my UNI and they sell some beletry as well. And there is a corner right behind one of the shelves, where you can hide and read to your hearts content. I simply dont have the money to spend 20 euros on a book, but I used to have a 1,5 hours break between my courses.... so I spent them reading books in the book store. But I had a bad conscience because of it.....

chiisai_hana, you can't read in Chapters anymore? That sucks... When I was at home, I would read mangas and books in the bookstore... usually get about half way through the manga and then decide whether or not I'll buy it. I never read it all though... I wonder why? I could have saved myself lots of money
biggrin.gif

First of all, I never go to a local book store on my spare time
laugh.gif

Second, if I wanted to read mangas for free without the shame of not buying them, I'd read them at my schools library. I must have read over 10 mangas last year at my school whenever I had my spare time. But I'm not really a manga person, I wouldn't mind collecting them though

ps. Perhaps a title more descriptive than "do you do this" would be helpful.

Meh im yet to find a single library that has nvm sells Manga so i just have to use my local forbidden planet for my Manga needs,

But i do get annoyed when i go in for a piece of Manga and they dont have it!

Well when i dont have money i go and read the mangas without buying them at the moment but if i do like the series and get hooked on it i buy the manga later on even though i already did read it.

I don't earn money and my parents give me money only for kendo, so i can't afford buying manga. In my town there are only 2 places where i can buy manga. I'm going to one of them and reading some volumes that came out.
One time when i started reading manga i read 11 volumes of Video Girl Ai with my friend in bookstore. We were sitting and all volumes were on table. After few hours of reading i put them back on shelf. Nobody have ever disturbed me except people wanting to sit next to me.

I buy manga and read it at home!

I have never got idea to read it in shop....
biggrin.gif

The thing I do is that I just ''plärään (fastly turn pages from begin to end)'' it.

Some stores like the Walden Books i go to allow you to so yeah. I read them a bit before i buy them after all why waste the money on buying a book and then when you get home and begin to read it only to find out it is absolutly horrible. To me it is just common sense.
