QUOTE (WolfPackOtaku @ Sep 03 2010, 05:51 PM)After reading the current manga, even to volume 7, the amount of time has been less than a week. I don't see any reason why anyone would have complaints. Given the scenario that the zombie apocalypse has begun, many events can happen within seven days. What I'm finding a bit off is the taking out of order of arriving at the hilltop residence and when Takashi and Saeko split off from the group. But that is a mere technicality.
But I also am sensing that there will be a cut-off for the time being. At the rate of printing in the manga, it might be at least two years before a second season is produced, if it is produced at all.
The author and illustrator are exploring different reactions people in a modern society would have when the entire social order has collapsed. I find the reading and the series amusing and has given me some points to speculate and amuse on. We should enjoy there high level of skill to illustrate and write a story.
Again, I'm speaking purely from the non-manga, looking solely at the anime point of view. I can understand and even respect how the creator wrote this story and that he probably deliberately wrote this story the way he did to cover all the possible events that could unfold in the first days of civilization breaking down.
What I'm saying is, from the standpoint of a viewer watching this story unfold, there really hasn't felt like anything major has been achieved. There really hasn't been a climatic moment they've built the story up to in order to reach a conclusion; even if it's only purpose is to usher in an open ending to this season/series.
I would consider it a disappointment because of this; not to say that the whole series is disappointing, rather the "ending" would be. This is another basis of why I try not to read a manga before seeing the anime once it's announced and I find the premise interesting; I try to stay objective towards the anime without a biased based upon the original work. (not that reading there's anything wrong with reading ahead or having read the manga, it's just my personal preference
) The action, the artistry, the premise and even the fan service is nice, however unless it has a point or ultimate direction... it can be argued there's a lack of substance.
Perhaps this is the hard part of storytelling with this particular type of story too. The story is about survival against "them" and humanity running amok. The "antagonist" is generalized and not anything specific like an organization, a person or group in particular. These aren't normal people banding together to take on a military power or some organization like a gang or group of terrorists. This story is more about this particular group of people simply trying to survive and as such without a main "bad guy" to focus upon, the milestones they reach at each success feel a bit less significant. Or maybe not... perhaps I'm just in a minority on this.
