New report out which implies most anime is pornographic. You can read the ANN report here. It sounds like the government is going to crack down on hentai content within Canada, and while you have to give them credit for getting research that defines shota, loli, yaoi, yuri, you also must look at the list of sources they used.

Wikipedia articles.

Anyone have any other articles about this issue? Or thoughts in general?

Because of uprisings from certain sources (i.e. fake info websites, wikipedia, etc...) the government up in Canada thinks of animes as "another influential disruption". Like other countries, Canada thinks that not only does anime promote pornography, it promotes various types of things that can be easily influenced by. Canada is just being as cautious as they would with violence games.

haha that is a new word "shotacon", sounds like another anime convention at first glance

. though it confuse me with the meaning but I am thinking of "shotokons" (spelling?) as in the basic fighters from SF ie Ryu, Ken, and Akuma.

Shotacon isn't a new word. I knew what that was before I knew what loli was, actually.

But see, the impression a lot of people seem to be getting is that they're saying anime in general is bad. With video games, they specify 'violent'. If they came on and said "all video games are violent and should be watched out for" that wouldn't be a fair assessment either. If they mean to specify hentai, then it doesn't come across overly clear since they repeatedly say "hentai, called anime in the west".

well for me it i s a new word =P

anywayzs with what your saying, all I can say is let them complain as long as it isn't really gonna affect USA's anime distrubution and wutnot. I agree with you if there saying that about anime what about games, music, and even movies.

games = violence 80%+ of the time
music = damages the ear if used frequently or at a high volume - have you heard about the guy sui'ing *wrong spelling*
movies = has some pornagraphic content as well

well that is my 2cents.

The Canadian government is becoming more like the US goverment. except they getting there info from Wikipedia instead of CNN.
I think that report is just another one of these phases that governments go through to pretend there doing something instead of focusing on real issues. Like we had outrage with violence in anime and computer games. "Kid 15, steals airrifle and then tries to break into cars" the housewives and the goveners of this country decide they should ban GTA:San Andreas...
But fortunatly a voice of reason says "well dont by you 15yr old sons 18rated games"

Its the same thing here but they havent been told that there is a difference between anime and hentai.

that article looks strange.

First of all, wikipedia is not an acceptable reference for an official publication.
Second, there is no such thing as a national police service in Canada. We have the RCMP (or GRC) (Royal canadian mounted police or gendarmerie royale du Canada)

It looks more like a report that was taken under advisement by a para-govermemntal organization. It far from a law and far an official govermental report. Look at by who it was produce

So just be carefull about it. The last time there were any concert about something like that was in a case in Alberta a few years ago. And Alberta is, well, it is know for there rather prudish positions.

this is where southpark kicks in : BLAME CANADA etc ;p

Sucks for Canada man this is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Stupid man come on how many people watch porn. Anime is so harm less im tired of people that have no idea about a topic and make an assumption about something they do not experiece everyday like us. I hope it does not effect the Canadian Otaku. We will be there for you people but man this is stupid. Also they have to remember were anime is made in Japan it is also a cultural thing so there going to be panty shoots and sexual innuendo.

You guys can see Im mad ok im fine now.

I wish Western culture was a little bit more open sometimes. I know the public libraries here have sent back/removed manga from their catelogues because of non-sexual nudity in series meant for kids (something a la magical girl transformations)

But, as long as it's available to us ...

those people are just thinking too much.

compare sailormoon transforming and flay when she died and visited kira in his cockpit. both are girls who are undressed, but "covered" by some celestrial colours. how would they differentiate what's ok and what's not??

and plus... what's wrong with a lil contact between cartoon characters? seems like it's ok for viewers to see real people doing it instead (remember 'Friends'?) @@

this article is just whacked.

Our culture is more latin based than anglo-saxon and its a lot more open to many things like that. For example, those books would never have been removed.

For the non-canadians out there, Quebec is the french province of Canada.

@mkk,
read what I wrote higher up. That is VERY FAR from an official goverment publication. Its not even coming from a ministry. So you can sleep without fears.

It looks more like the "activist grandma" kind of thing. Ever seen that Simpson episode where there is that woman screamin "Think of the childrens!!!!" every minute? Well, its the same thing. So over zealous group who wants to "protect the young innocent chilldren from coruption" are producing reports to try to warn the rest of the world about the "evilness" of japanease made "comic books"

Hopefully they don't go door to door hunting down everyone who watches anime and arrests them on public tv. jk Sucks for people who live in Canada(me)

Hm, I guess that would be true. People I know tend to use it to mean "english" culture though, so, no disrespect intended, I hadn't even thought of French-Canada or any other non-English country

I know the one book was removed because a parent filed a complaint with the library board. Since then there's been a 'no nudity' policy

ah well , all gonvernments are retards anyway , for example they sent soldiers to other countries while they sit safe at home , it think they`d think twice if theyd have to go fite themselves

I think the biggest problems with canadian anime market is... people have a really bad opinion of animes. All they hear about that is that anime are violent and full of pervert thing. Not lot of people know about anime like hmm.. aishiteruze baby because they are not distributed here. Also, animes are filtered and sensured a lot before coming here (english animes in USa and french animes in france) we never get the chance to have original animes.

Here's some animes canadian know about in general, Ninja-scroll / Akira / Dragon-Ball / Elfen Lied / Trigun / Hellsing. I'm not telling those animes are boring or bad (exept for dragon balls sorry for the fans here
tongue.gif
) but they always look like the same. If we were able to get animes from every categories and do some pub for each of them (action / shoujo / eichii / etc) I think every one would be ale able to appreciate japanese arts
happy.gif
.

By the way I don't know why people think animes are to violent or full of explicit material because english movie are full of violence (with real people) and franch movie normally full of explicit material (with real people again). Is a drawing loosing his head is more violent than a person loosing is head
dry.gif
.

Urashima Keitarou

I believe Love Hina rocks and they should show the entire serie every month! Now, that's something I'd want to see. I'd laugh all day long and live happy for afew months. Speaking of anime, Tom and Jerry involved A LOT of violence. However, it was funny like any other anime/cartoon.
