Welcome to Co-op tuts! This is a new thread started by Ausdoerrt and yours truly to share our work on how we do our sigs. Of course anyone is welcome to join and share your work in tut format. This is a work in progress and this will benefit everyone. I'm sure there are a lot of members who want to make their own sigs but have no idea on how or where to begin. I will be posting the first tut on how to create a simple WINGZERO619 style sig from start to finish. I'm sorry gimp users, this was made in Photoshop CS. You are welcome to follow the tut and see if you're able to score some ideas from it. After the tut, please post your work so we can see your progress and if you have any questions, comments, or ideas regarding anything we post up, please feel free to PM us or drop a detailed reply on here and when we can, we'll be more than happy to help. This thread is purely for fun and as a learning tool to expand our horizons in different ways to create pieces of art. So let's get started!

Title : Sig from start to finish

Well, it is a fine way to make sigs, fast too! I would have never guessed this is your way of making BGs - prety original!
The only thing I have is two suggestions on the "Border Time":
1. You don't really need the Rectangular Marquee tool at all, the whole process can be done with just Magic Wand; it's more exact too.
2. Desired colour: the best way to do it is to use the Eyedrop tool to pick a colour from the BG or render, and later customize it if you wish.

Nice job on your firts tut! Gotta try your way!

Oh I guess I didn't mention about the desired color. The color I chose was actually from the bg. So it's totally up to the user. As for the border, that's the way I've been doing it for a long time! Thanks for the comments. I know this will be a very promising thread. You're going to work on your Margery tut right? Well I'm almost getting ready to leave for my flight. I'll catch you again on Monday night. Can't wait to see some results!

Here's what I got!

for the print screen, could you use the

(i know it was the thumbnail

)

well, PS has 2-3 ways of making the ssame effect so it doesn't matter what u use as long as u get the effect u dessire
take the rendering part of this tut, i do it different: i use the filter->extract tool; off course it's still a lot of work, but whatever u got used to, is the best way
wink.gif

i think i'll try out this tut, hopefully my skills will improve (so far, with the help of WINGZERO619, they did)

Well, this is one of the ways, Wingzero619 used the one he knew best to help others. I cannot really copy his style, I don't like abstract BGs...
My tutorial is coming up i 2 weeks, so look forward to it.
Also, I am leading the section till monday, so be free to ask me any question you have!

Just to try this tutorial i made this:

nekoshoujo.jpg

I didn't really had the right brushes for it so i just whiped something up and created this signture in 5 minutes or so. I didn't even bother to give it some extra details like i normally do.

Also WINGZERO619 could you upload and post that brush pack you used. I want to give another go at this tut.

I should have almost the exact brush as he does =D was the only brush mention was constrange?? Well I go upload constrange right now.

I'll try this tut soon.

Edit:

Constrange Brush

Edit Again:
Well just finish this and here my result and this the first tut I did not get stuck on

I recommend any noob for photoshop start with this tut.

@Kansatsusha: Nice job, I would recommend a little more attention to the render - try playing with brightness/contrast settings, colour variations, so that it blends better with the BG. Or, you could play w/ BG colour.
@DoR: It doesn't really matter what brush exactly you are using. Yours are just fine, you could just bru more intensely to cover more of the "empty spot" on the left... Nice job!

well, don't know any cute characters (or better yet, didn't look for any
dry.gif
)
so i made this here one, I followed this tutorial, so i guess it's ok to post it:

I was feeling tired and didn't put much effort into it xD

Nope, you can't post it, it's a cuteness tutorial!

Just jokin'!

Your BG is kind of blurry, and it is also way to dark. Try moving around your "blur" layers, and use a different main brush - sth with thiner and sharper textures. If you don't have any good ones, they can be found :here and here and here.
Your sig does need more effort=)
Also, your render is cut off in weird places - like you can only see half-Flack cannon in her right hand, etc. Try playing w/ render size, and it will do you good.
BTW, for this specific sig, I would recommend different grunge or space brushes.
Adding some details like text or foreground effects would also help.
Technically, you can make a decent sig out of this, just give it a little more attention! =)

@Kansa: Oh my!!! It's the beautiful Prim once again posing for your canvas! I see you went for her bow color and light pinkish ruffles. It looks like you used the same blotchy brush set as me lol. Your rendering looks clean and colors are soft. Great yellow complimentary color from the bell to your main text. I would recommend feathering Prim in about 2px's. Turn up the contrast no more that +5 to kind of match the color strength of your text. Excellent job on your sig. I'm glad you did not get stuck on my tut! Oh yeah, BTW, thanks for uploading that brush set for the team. Constrange was the only brush pack I used.

@DoR: The yellow color is looking sweet with your render. I like the use of the underlineing on your main text. I can't really tell, but I don't think you used a drop shadow. If not, try putting one on and if you did, have the spread be more noticable. Another thing I noticed on your render, did you take your time in rendering her or did you just clean her real quick? I see some jaggedness around her... especially her legs. Just take the blur tool and go over the endges with like a 3px soft circle brush. That should do the trick. Either than that, awesome job.

@Ausdoerrt: Your bg suits the princess well. I'm liking the blend of colors from your render coloring. Excelllent! The gradient overlay looks nice on your text. I would move the "co-op..." text to the bottom right hand corner so you won't overlap her hair and ears. Try adjusting the brightness/contrast a bit more. I applied -5/+25. See how well it looks behind your render. Great job!

@BAakaTheOne: Your border goes well with the sig. There are a lot of dark spots on your sig. I know it's hard to render color with your render because it's mostly black. As you can tell, there are some nice colors you extracted. You might want to throw on a couple more of BLUR layers and concentrate on bringing out those nice colors. It's going to look good with a colorful bg. I like your render, it's very stern. Add some text to it and you can call it a day. I hope you try again using my tut with 100% effort. Can't wait until you produce another one. One more thing... I'm glad that helping you out has improved your skills.

Again, to everyone who has tried out my tutorial, King's to you my friends! All your artwork looks great. I was so happy to find all these sigs posted so I can see. It was hard for me to be away from the forums while I was on my little vacation lol. I even went to an electronic store and tried to find a wireless pc. Well I'm back now and very happy to see your hardwork! I really want this thread to grow with more added tuts. The great part is seeing all your results. +1 to everyone!

Primula will be posing in a lot of my sig one reason is I still have about 16 more render of her
biggrin.gif
that I did other reason is I love her
wub.gif
Yes I did use the same brushes as you place one of the brush in the same spot too XD except for the one with the dots. For the text I had it just red at first but I wanted it to pop out a bit more so I tried to use her eye color with the red but it didn't work well so I went for the bell. humm feathering.....??! no clue what that mean
laugh.gif
Just gave it +5 contrast and some more saturation and once I know what feathering then I post my better result. No problem and I figure it was only the Constrange brush after I finish the tut

feathering:
  • select your render layer
  • select the Magic Wand Tool, put the tolerance at about 200 (it is what works for me)
  • select the render with the tool (due to the tolerance it should select the whole render, if it doesn't just put a higher tolerance - up to 255)
  • right click on the selection
  • select feather
  • in the new window put 2px as WINGZERO619 instructed
  • apply
  • again right click, and choose Select Inverse (or press CTRL+I)
  • press DELETE
@WINGZERO619, I'll definitely make another go at this tu (really pressed with time these days) and, if I have the time, finish this one; again thanks for the tips

ooo, almost forgot: +1 on a great tut

Thx BAakaTheOne
Wow feathering is a good technique I probally be use that now on

hummm...mine look a lot better

@kansatsusha
you're welcome
wow
ohmy.gif
, it looks a lot better, the blending of the render is better and you brought up more colours to the sig, I'm waiting to see more sigs from u
tongue.gif

well, i had another go at the tut, here's what i got (I'll be sure to redo the earlier one too

)

@BAakaTheOne: I'm definately commending you on a job well done giving it a 2nd go at it. Your number two trial sig is better. Your canvas has beautiful array of colors which perfectly goes well with your render. This sig has excellent artistic blending and a great choice of brushes to bring out the very expression on her face. When you slapped the text on your canvas, what mode was your text in? It looks like normal for some reason. You might want to switch it out to smooth, sharp or strong. Try those out and see which one looks best. +1 on your 2nd attempt.

@Kansa: Definately better Kansa. I brought both your sigs on photoshop and compared them. I see you brought out Prim's color a bit more which was an excellent touch to tie the bond between your bg and fg. I'm glad you like the feathering technique. There are others you can use but feathering is a great trick to quickly blend renders on your sig. Again, another work of art by you Kansa. Kudos to your hard work! +1 for your modifications.

@BAakaTheOne;Kansa: You guys are awesome. Such teamwork. I was going to come on here this morning and provide instructions for feathering. Thanks BAakaTheOne for helping out. You should do a tut on feathering. I'll have to try your way. My way is a bit different but definately there should be a tut on feathering. Great job both of you! This is definately fun and admire teamplayers!

thanks for your comments
rolleyes.gif

teamwork
unsure.gif
I was around when she posed the question and answered, nothing much (how do you do feathering, if you don't mind my asking ?)
like I said before I'll redo the first attempt (didn't actually liked how it turned out
dry.gif
)

the text, i believe it's smooth (or is it strong, let me check..... it's French Script MT Regular 48px Strong with a glow and a gradient overlay effect) (i didn't what to look for a font at that time, so i chose one that seemed nice)
what happened with the first version for my second try is that I forgot the skin colour layer on invisible and a layer with the render below the blended one on visible, so it didn't quite follow the tut
tongue.gif

i also put a layer on top where i messed with the dodge/burn and a bit of blur/sharpen/smudge tools

I don't know if you can see it but the black spots on the right is actually from her eye
biggrin.gif

@BAakaTheOne: I'll make up a small tut on how I do my feathering so everyone can see how I do my version of feathering. It's amazing how much a skin color layer can add to your sig. I started doing that feature just for fun and now it's just part of my setup. It doesn't hurt to experiment but I'm glad you got the idea of how I create sigs. You did a great job on your 2nd trial with your 2nd sig. I'm curious on how you make your bg's.

@Everyone: I'm very curious on everyone elses style in how they create sigs. It will be fun to mix and match features and see what we can come up with.

QUOTE (WINGZERO619 @ Oct 31 2006, 10:37 PM)I'm curious on how you make your bg's.
I actually started getting better with making bgs at the same time I started messing with brushes, and that's when the signature creation thread was made (for which I'm very grateful - I got to try out some great tuts) which inspired me to create my sig for the competition and got to meet you and your pieces of advice
biggrin.gif

thanks again

before this, I only did animations (screen caps put in order) and messed a bit with some filters

maybe I'll do a tut on how I make feathering too
tongue.gif
(but when I'll have more time
sad.gif
though it shouldn't be too difficult)
